WATERPROOF EXPEDITIONS

Making exclusive cruises and expeditions more accessible than ever

Waterproof Expeditions specializes in offering exclusive cruises and expeditions to various destinations such as Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, Greenland, and Alaska. With over 25 years of experience in providing these journeys, they ensure an unforgettable trip through small-scale cruises and exceptional activities.

The challenge

So you want to book a trip of a lifetime? But where to start?

Waterproof offers such a wide range of trips that it can be challenging to choose. Not only do they offer cruises to 17 different destinations, but for each destination, there are often dozens of ships and activities to choose from.

How can we ensure that a potential new customer navigates easily through all this information? And how do we present this information in a clear and organized manner?

The solution

The goal was to make sure that all this information was made accessible in a manner that made sense and did not overwhelm the user. That meant presenting details only when they mattered and guiding the user step-by-step through the process of exploring the different trips. As part of this project, I not only completely redesigned the website but also created a fitting new search experience.

Make it easy

With the homepage, we aimed to provide the user with various options to access the information they need to make a well-informed decision about a trip. It is also important to distinguish between the different types of users and their different goals: Some users would already have a destination in mind, some would want to book a trip with a specific activity tied to it, and some users would simply just want to browse, and are not yet ready to book a trip right away.

Everything in the right place

When a user clicks on a specific journey, they are directed to the journey detail page. To assist users in navigating through all the information presented on this page, we made some choices:

NAVIGATION - By using a horizontal navigation that remains sticky on the page, we ensure that users can easily browse through various pieces of information about this journey.

STICKY MODULE - The sticky module on the right ensures that the most important information remains prominently visible.
This includes the name of the journey, the departure ports, and the price.

COMPONENTS - With the goal of making it easy for the client to customize the content on the page, I designed a variety of components, that they can enable or disable.

CARDS - To facilitate viewing of other travel dates, I created small cards with key concise information and a clear call-to-action.

Inspiration

Admittedly: Booking a journey with Waterproof is not something you do on a whim. There's a rather exclusive price tag attached to it, and when you're spending that much, you want to know what you're getting. That's why it was important for Waterproof to have a blog page as well. This way, the story behind a cruise or expedition can be told. For blog overview page we used some of the content blocks from the homepage and created a magazine style layout.

Part of the blog page.

Reflection

This project was maybe one of my most challenging projects I’ve worked on so far. It was my first major project and there was so much involved that it was sometimes difficult not to get lost in the details. What I learned is that it's good to take a step back sometimes, to keep seeing the bigger picture. Looking back on this project, I am incredibly proud of how it ultimately turned out.
